I'm not talking about G+.  Google Groups works pretty much like Yahoo Groups - it's all via email.  For files and such you can integrate with Google Drive, and that does require going to the platform, but that's true with yahoo groups as well.  But just for messages, it's simply email.

A couple of my other groups use it… It's fairly robust and open source friendly… and free.

G+ is getting closed down. Yahoo groups are slowly dying. The reasons we stayed with Yahoo is because it was one of the few places that could be replied to via email. Most everything else you can get a notification for a post, but you then have to go to reply.

And of course these groups.

 

The biggest problem is that the project team has been shrinking in the last year, we desperately need coders to push some needed advances to the code base.
